A preliminary hearing for a 26-year-old driver, who denied driving through the Westmoreland County Courthouse in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, was held last week. From the very beginning the 26-year-old has claimed he was innocent, and that a witness had the wrong person. However, he is still facing a number of traffic violations and charges related to the crash.
The accident happened back in October. According to police, around 10:30 p.m. a driver lost control while behind the wheel, which caused a pickup truck to hit the handicap ramp attached to the extension complex. After hitting the ramp, the pickup truck jumped over a plantar, went through the outer wall of the elevator shaft, through a window and came to a stop in the actual elevator.
In total, there was approximately $85,000 worth of damage done to the complex.
A witness who was standing nearby said that after the accident he saw a man get out of the truck, and then start to walk, before running away. After seeing this, the witness -- along with four others -- started to chase the man. When the same witness caught up to him, the 26-year-old appeared to be confused with what was going on, and claimed that he had no idea what was going on, and that it was not his truck.
A Greensburg officer also claimed that the 26-year-old seemed to have difficulty standing. Once at the hospital, a test showed he had a blood alcohol content of 0.292 percent, which is more than three times the legal driving limit -- although it does not appear that anyone actually ever saw him driving.
Even though the man has always claimed that he was not the one driving the pickup truck, he has since been charged with a number of different motor vehicle violations, driving under the influence of alcohol, accident involving damage to property and disorderly conduct.
